What Is Involved in Gas Commissioning?
Commissioning is the step between a finished installation and a working one. It covers more than turning the gas on.
- Confirm the strength and tightness tests have passed
- Purge the pipework of air, venting to a safe place
- Check the meter and regulator are delivering the correct pressure
- Measure working pressure at the appliances under full load
- Prove safety shut off valves, interlocks and emergency stops
- Label the pipework and valves, and issue the records
If the working pressure drops too far when everything is running, the pipework is undersized or restricted. Picking this up at commissioning is far cheaper than finding it during production.
Older Factories and Multi Let Units

What Does Gas Safety Compliance Involve?
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require employers to keep pipework and appliances safe. In practice that means an annual inspection, a tightness test after any alteration, and records you can show an insurer.
