What Makes a Fit Out Go Smoothly?
Restaurant and bar fit outs move fast, and the gas installation is often left late. Three things help.
First, confirm the available gas load with the landlord before ordering appliances. A shared supply in a mixed use block may not have the spare capacity a large kitchen needs.
Second, agree the pipe route and the purge vent position while walls and ceilings are still open.
Third, book the tightness test and commissioning visit into the programme, because most landlords and insurers want the certificate before opening day.
What Happens If There Is a Gas Leak?
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. They attend, make the supply safe and leave. The repair inside your premises is your responsibility. If it is safe, shut off the gas at the emergency control valve and open doors and windows.

Staying Compliant: Standards, Permits and Records
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require those in control of premises to keep gas installations safe. Records matter as much as the work, because landlords, insurers and principal contractors commonly ask for them. Tightness testing and purging follow IGEM/UP/1 or IGEM/UP/1A, and commercial kitchens should meet BS 6173.
Greater Manchester has ten councils, and each is the highway authority for its own roads.
