How Often Should Commercial Gas Pipework Be Tested?
It is one of the most common questions we hear from business owners.
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require employers and those in control of premises to keep gas pipework and appliances in a safe condition. They do not give one fixed interval for every commercial site. In practice, an inspection every 12 months is the accepted standard, and most insurers and landlords ask for it.
A tightness test is also needed whenever pipework is installed, extended, altered or repaired, when a smell of gas is reported, and when unused pipework is brought back into service. See commercial gas certificates.

Carried out to IGEM/UP/1 or IGEM/UP/1A. Leaks found during a test are traced and repaired.
Purging and Commissioning

Old process pipework is traced, purged of gas and capped, not simply left in place.

Mills, Conversions and Listed Buildings
Many of Bradford's mills have new lives as apartments, offices, studios and shops. Little Germany, Lister Mills in Manningham and Salts Mill at Saltaire are the best known.
Gas work in these buildings needs care. Walls are thick stone, floors are deep, and routes for pipework and flues are limited. Saltaire is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many other mills are listed. Smell Gas? What to Do First
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Put out naked flames, open doors and windows, and turn the gas off at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so.

The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council is the highway authority for the whole district, including Shipley, Bingley, Keighley and Ilkley. Any excavation in an adopted road or footway needs its consent.
A Clean Air Zone operates here. Private cars are not charged, but vans and lorries that do not meet the emission standard are. It has no bearing on the gas work itself, though it can affect deliveries to central sites.
Northern Gas Networks runs the local gas distribution network and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. New supplies, meter upgrades and disconnections are arranged with the network or your supplier.
