Who Needs a Commercial Gas Engineer in Hull?

Flat Ground, Wet Ground
The city sits on low, flat land beside the Humber, and the water table is close to the surface. That has a direct bearing on buried pipework.
Trenches can take in water quickly, so excavation and pipe laying need to be planned as one continuous operation where possible. Polyethylene pipe suits these conditions because it does not corrode, but joints still have to be made clean and dry, and the pipe has to be tested before the trench is closed.
Older buried steel pipework can corrode from the outside in wet ground, and the first sign is often a failed tightness test. Replacing the run in PE is usually the lasting fix. See underground gas pipework.

Gas Safety Duties for Hull Employers
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place a duty on employers to keep gas pipework and appliances safe. A periodic inspection and tightness test gives you evidence that you are doing so, and many insurers ask for it. IGEM/UP/1 and IGEM/UP/1A set out the test method. Commercial kitchens should meet BS 6173, with an interlock between the gas and the extraction.
The city boundary is tight, and many business parks sit just outside it. Hull City Council is the highway authority inside the boundary. East Riding of Yorkshire Council covers Hessle, Cottingham, Beverley, Hedon, Saltend, Melton and Brough. An estate on the edge of the city may fall under either, so it is worth checking before any excavation near a road.
Northern Gas Networks operates the gas distribution network and owns the mains, the service pipe and the emergency control valve. New supplies, upgrades and disconnections go through the network or your supplier.

For a gas escape, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. They make the supply safe but do not repair your installation. If it is safe, shut off the gas at the emergency control valve and ventilate the area.
