How Does Gas Purging Work?
New or altered pipework is full of air. Pipework being taken out of use is full of gas. Purging is the controlled process of swapping one for the other, so that an explosive mixture is not left inside the pipe.
In a direct purge, gas pushes the air out through a vent point. In an indirect purge, an inert gas such as nitrogen goes in first, so the fuel gas and the air never meet. Either way, the purge is vented outdoors and the gas concentration is measured at the vent until the purge is complete. IGEM/UP/1 requires a written procedure, and we prepare one for each job.

What Should You Do in a Gas Emergency?
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
- Open doors and windows, and do not operate electrical switches.
- Shut off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so.
- Call us. Our emergency engineers are available 24/7 to find the fault, repair it, and test and purge the pipework before gas is restored.
The emergency service will make the supply safe, but it does not repair pipework or appliances inside your premises. That part is down to a commercial gas engineer.
Commercial Gas Safety and Compliance
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place a duty on employers to maintain gas pipework and appliances. If your building has changed hands, if pipework has stood unused, or if there has been a smell of gas, a tightness test tells you where you stand. Tightness testing and purging on commercial sites follow IGEM/UP/1, or IGEM/UP/1A for smaller installations, and commercial kitchens should meet BS 6173.
Northern Gas Networks owns and runs the gas distribution network across West Yorkshire, up to your emergency control valve. New connections, meter upgrades and disconnections go through the network or your supplier.
Leeds City Council is the highway authority. If a buried pipe route would cross or run beside an adopted road or footpath, its highways team needs to be involved before any excavation.
