Keeping the Heating On Through a North East Winter
Winters here are long, and a failed boiler plant in January is a serious problem for a hotel, care home, school or office. A good share of our work in Newcastle is about heating: replacing boilers, upgrading plant rooms and making sure the pipework that feeds them is correctly sized, sound and tested.
The best time to do this is between late spring and early autumn. Pipework can be altered, tested and purged, and the plant commissioned, without anyone going cold. We also carry out pre season checks so that faults are found before the first cold week.

Tightness testing before new pipework is used, after any alteration, and as routine gas safety testing. Outdoor or unheated pipework is given proper stabilisation time, because cooling air inside the pipe can look like a leak.
Gas Purging and Commissioning

When the Gas or the Heating Fails
For a suspected gas escape, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. If it is safe, turn the gas off at the emergency control valve and open doors and windows.
Our own emergency repair service is available at all hours for the work that follows. We find the fault, repair it, and test and purge the pipework so that heating, hot water or cooking can be restored.
Compliance, Highways and the Gas Network
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require employers to keep pipework and appliances safe. The procedure for testing commercial premises is set out in IGEM/UP/1, with IGEM/UP/1A for smaller installations. Commercial kitchens should meet BS 6173.
The Tyne is a council boundary. Newcastle City Council is the highway authority on the north bank and Gateshead Council on the south. North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Northumberland councils cover the areas beyond. A Clean Air Zone covers the city centre and the main bridges. Private cars are not charged, but older vans and lorries are, which is a factor when planning deliveries.
Northern Gas Networks operates the gas distribution network. New supplies, meter upgrades and disconnections are arranged with the network or your supplier.
