Decommissioning Redundant Pipework
Old works collect dead legs. We isolate them at source, purge them clear, cut back and cap, and update the drawings.

Why Is Nitrogen Purging Used on Industrial Pipework?
When pipework is purged directly, gas and air meet inside the pipe. In a short length of small pipe, that mixing zone is tiny and is quickly blown through. In a long, large diameter factory main, it can be a substantial volume of flammable gas.
Nitrogen removes that risk. The pipework is first filled with nitrogen, which will not burn. Gas then displaces the nitrogen when commissioning, or air displaces it when decommissioning. At no point do fuel gas and air meet inside the pipe.
Purge volumes are calculated from the pipe sizes and lengths, flow is controlled, and readings are taken at the vent until the purge is proved complete.

Testing Standards, Councils and the Gas Network
IGEM/UP/1 is the standard for strength testing, tightness testing and direct purging on industrial and commercial installations. It requires a written procedure for each purge. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 set the duty on employers to keep pipework and appliances safe. Commercial kitchens in converted works buildings should meet BS 6173, including an interlock between the gas and the extraction.
Cadent operates the gas distribution network in South Yorkshire. Mains, services and the emergency control valve belong to the network, and new or upgraded supplies are requested from Cadent or your supplier.
Sheffield City Council is the highway authority within the city. Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster councils cover their own districts, and Derbyshire County Council covers Dronfield and Chesterfield. Most industrial pipework is inside the site boundary, where highway consent does not arise.
