How a Typical Project Runs
- Survey. We look at your gas load, appliances, pipe routes and the existing installation.
- Design and planning. Pipe sizes, materials, routes and any shutdown are agreed before work starts.
- Install, test and purge. Pipework goes in, then it is tested, purged and commissioned.
- Handover and support. You receive the records, and we remain available for maintenance and changes.
Emergency Gas Repairs, Day or Night
A smell of gas should be reported to the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. They will isolate the supply if needed.
Finding and fixing the fault is then down to a commercial gas engineer. Our emergency repair service runs 24/7. Gas Safety, Testing Standards and Local Rules
Employers have a duty under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 to keep pipework and appliances safe. Annual inspection is the accepted standard. Tightness testing and purging on commercial sites follow IGEM/UP/1 or IGEM/UP/1A, which set the test pressure, stabilisation time and permitted pressure drop. Commercial kitchens should also meet BS 6173, which calls for an interlock that cuts the gas if the extraction fails.
Cadent runs the gas distribution network in the West Midlands and owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve. New supplies and disconnections are arranged with Cadent or your supplier.
Birmingham City Council is the highway authority, so any excavation in the public highway needs its permission. The Clean Air Zone inside the A4540 Middleway does not change how gas work is done, but it is one more reason to plan deliveries and access for central sites.
