Tightness Testing
Carried out at a lower pressure after a stabilisation period. The permitted pressure drop is very small. It applies after any alteration, or whenever a leak is suspected.
Nitrogen Purging and Commissioning
On a large main the pipe is filled with nitrogen first, and gas then displaces it. Working pressures and safety shut off valves are checked afterwards. See gas testing and gas purging.

Working Around Production
Most manufacturers cannot stop to suit a contractor. We plan gas work for shutdown weeks, weekends or nights, and we break larger jobs into sections that can each be tested and purged within the time available.
Where a main cannot be taken out of service, a live connection by gas hot tapping may be an option. It allows a new branch to be added under pressure. It is not suitable for every pipe or every site, so it always starts with a survey.
Each building, zone and appliance should have its own isolation valve. Boosted supplies need low pressure protection so that the booster cannot pull down the network. Emergency shut off points should be obvious and reachable.

Standards We Work To
IGEM/UP/1 is the standard for strength testing, tightness testing and direct purging on industrial and commercial gas installations. Test pressures and durations depend on the operating pressure and the volume of the pipework. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 set the duty on employers to keep installations safe.
The old Silk Mill marks the southern end of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, and listed mill buildings up the valley through Darley Abbey and Belper may need consent for visible pipework or flues.
Derby City Council is the highway authority within the city. Derbyshire County Council covers the rest of the county. Burton upon Trent comes under Staffordshire County Council, and Castle Donington under Leicestershire County Council.
