Do You Need a Commercial Gas Safety Certificate?
If you employ people or let premises where gas is used, the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require you to keep the pipework and appliances in a safe condition. The regulations do not set one fixed interval for every commercial site, but an inspection every 12 months is the accepted norm, and most insurers, landlords and licensing teams expect it.
An inspection checks the appliances, the pipework, the ventilation and the safety controls. A catering inspection also looks at the interlock between the extraction and the gas supply. See commercial gas certificates.
Listed Buildings and Conversions
Liverpool has a large number of listed buildings. Fixing pipework to historic fabric, or cutting new routes through it, may need listed building consent. The planning team at Liverpool City Council is the place to check, and it is better done before the design is fixed than after.
On a strip out, gas is purged from the old pipework with air or nitrogen until a detector confirms it is clear. The pipework is then capped, labelled and recorded as dead. That protects the demolition team, who will later be cutting into it.

Cadent runs the gas distribution network across the North West and owns the service pipe up to the emergency control valve. New supplies, larger meters and permanent disconnections go to Cadent or your supplier.
For highways, the authority depends on the site. The city council covers the city itself. Sefton Council covers Bootle, Seaforth and Crosby. Knowsley Council covers Kirkby, Huyton and Halewood, and Wirral Council covers the far side of the Mersey. Excavation in an adopted road needs the right authority to agree first.
