This page describes why testing and purging matter, how we carry them out, from the first site visit to the final inspection, and the different types of gas we work with.
Why Gas Testing and Purging Matter
Gas testing and purging protect the people in a building and the building itself. They confirm that a gas system is sound and they keep the installation within the safety regulations that the Gas Safe Register enforces.
Tightness and leak testing find faults before they cause harm. Purging removes the risk of a flammable mixture of gas and air inside the pipe. Both also help a system run efficiently.
Preventing Accidents and Injuries
Most gas incidents start with a leak that nobody knew about. Regular testing finds leaks early, which protects staff and cuts the risk of an escape building up somewhere enclosed.
Testing on a planned cycle also gives you the records that health and safety law expects an employer to hold.
How We Carry Out Gas Testing and Purging
Each job follows the same sequence. It starts with a free site visit and a quotation that sets out what needs to be done.
During the assessment we look at the site conditions, what you need and any safety measures the site requires, so the work meets the standards.
Initial Consultation and Assessment
We walk the site, look at the installation, note the pipework volume and agree how the testing and purging will be done.
This is where potential hazards are identified, such as a purge point that would vent near a window or an intake, and planned around.
Gas Testing
Tightness testing checks that pipework holds pressure without leaking. Leak testing locates the leak when a tightness test fails, using detection fluid and gas detectors on joints.
Every test is carried out under the health and safety regulations that apply to the site, and the result is recorded.
Gas Purging
Purging removes air from new pipework or gas from pipework being taken out of use. We use direct purging, where the fuel gas or air is introduced to displace what is in the pipe, and indirect purging with nitrogen, which keeps gas and air apart.
Direct purging suits smaller pipework. Indirect purging suits larger pipelines, where a direct purge would leave too much flammable mixture in the pipe.
Final Inspection and Certification
After testing and purging we carry out a visual inspection, a functional test and a check of the documentation, then issue the certificate.
The paperwork records what was tested, the readings taken and the purge carried out.
Types of Gas Testing and Purging We Offer
We test and purge natural gas, propane and industrial gas installations, including specialised sites such as laboratories.
Natural Gas Testing and Purging
Natural gas is what most commercial premises use. Our work includes pressure testing to detect leaks, composition analysis where gas quality is in question, and regular pipeline inspections.
Purging clears the pipework of air or of contaminants. We use protective equipment and monitor gas levels throughout.
Propane Gas Testing and Purging
Propane is heavier than air and collects in low places, so propane installations are tested and purged with that in mind.
We check the installation for leaks and irregularities, and purge residual propane safely so that it does not escape into the surroundings.
Industrial Gas Testing and Purging
Industrial gas systems are larger, run at higher pressures and cannot be off for long. Testing is planned around production, calibrated equipment is used, and purging is usually done with nitrogen.
The result is a system that meets the standards and runs as it should.
Laboratory Gas Testing and Purging
Laboratory pipework serves many outlets and is used by people who are not gas engineers. We check for leaks, assess gas purity where required and follow the safety measures the lab needs, including ventilation and personal protective equipment.
Regular testing keeps the lab within the regulations and keeps the people in it safe.
Our Approach to Safety and Quality
Safety comes first on every job, and the work is done to the standards at a competitive price. We are Gas Safe registered under number 568617.
