Commercial Gas Services for Sketty and West Swansea
Sketty is the residential and institutional heart of west Swansea. Singleton Hospital and the university campus sit on its edge, the Mumbles Road hospitality strip runs along the bay below it, and the suburb itself has parades of shops, cafes, pubs and care homes.
We provide commercial gas pipework, testing, purging, certification and repairs for all of them, and for the industrial estates and the waterfront businesses across the rest of the city. We work only on commercial and industrial systems.
Hospitals, Hotels and Care Homes We Work With
Hospitals and the University
Singleton Hospital and the Singleton campus run central boiler plant, laboratories and large kitchens where supply cannot be lost without notice.
Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes
Along Mumbles Road, in Sketty Cross, Uplands and the Marina, kitchens that trade seven days a week and need work planned for quiet mornings.
Care Homes and Schools
Boiler plant, hot water and kitchens that must keep running, so alterations are phased and shutdowns kept short.
Industry and Distribution
Swansea Enterprise Park, Fabian Way and the SA1 waterfront, with process gas, warm air heating and large plant rooms.
Our Services
Kitchen Gas for Hotels and Cafes
Kitchen pipework sized for the full appliance load, with the ventilation interlock BS 6173 calls for. See commercial catering.
Gas Testing and Purging
Tightness testing to IGEM/UP/1 or IGEM/UP/1A, direct and nitrogen purging, and written records. See gas testing and purging.
Gas Installation
New and altered pipework in steel, copper and buried PE. See commercial gas installation.
Certificates and Heating
Annual gas safety inspections, and boiler, warm air and radiant heating.
Sea Air and Sloping Streets
Sketty looks out over Swansea Bay, and the salt air reaches well up the hill. External steel gas pipework corrodes faster here than inland, at threads, clips and wall sleeves especially. During inspections we look closely at exposed pipework and replace sections that have deteriorated, then tightness test before the installation goes back into use.
The streets are steep and parking is tight around the hospital and campus, so we agree access and delivery arrangements before a visit rather than on the day.
Keeping Hospital and Campus Supplies Running
Large estates cannot simply be switched off. Work on a campus main is done in sections, each isolated, altered, tested and purged in turn, so that the rest of the site stays on. Where a supply cannot be interrupted at all, a live connection may be possible.
Estates teams usually need records in a set format for their compliance files, and we provide them.
Basement Kitchens and Converted Houses
Many of the cafes, restaurants and guest houses around Sketty Cross, Uplands and the seafront are in converted Victorian houses. Kitchens end up in basements or rear extensions, plant sits under the stairs, and pipework has to find its way through a building that was never designed for it.
Three things need care in these buildings. Ventilation: a kitchen below ground needs enough fresh air coming in to replace what the canopy takes out, and the interlock between the gas supply and the extraction has to work every time. Pipe routes: pipework through a cellar or a void must be protected, supported and accessible for future testing. Isolation: staff need an emergency valve they can reach without going into the kitchen.
We survey before we quote, so that the appliances you plan to fit will work in the space you have, and we can look at kitchen layouts before equipment is ordered. Where a room is too small or too enclosed for the planned equipment, it is far cheaper to find out at design stage than after the range has been delivered.
Why Estates Teams and Kitchens Choose Us
We work only on commercial and industrial gas systems and we are Gas Safe registered, number 568617. We are available seven days a week, with 24/7 emergency response, and quotes are free.
What to Do If You Smell Gas
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
- Open doors and windows and do not operate electrical switches.
- Shut off the gas at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so.
- Call us. Our emergency engineers attend at any hour to find the fault, repair it, and test and purge the pipework before gas is restored.
Compliance, Swansea Council and Wales and West Utilities
The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 apply in Wales as in England. Employers and those in control of premises must keep gas pipework and appliances safe, and an annual inspection is the accepted way to show it.
Swansea Council is both the planning authority and the highway authority for the city. Excavation in an adopted road or footway needs its consent, and the older buildings around Sketty Cross and Uplands may need listed building consent for visible pipework or flues.
Wales and West Utilities operates the gas distribution network in South Wales. It owns the pipework up to the emergency control valve and handles new supplies and disconnections, directly or through your supplier.
Beyond Sketty: Swansea and the Surrounding Postcodes
We cover Sketty, Killay and Tycoch (SA2), the city centre and Uplands (SA1), Mumbles (SA3), Gorseinon (SA4), Morriston and the Enterprise Park (SA6), and Neath (SA10 and SA11).
Further out we cover Port Talbot (SA12 and SA13), Llanelli (SA14 and SA15), Ammanford (SA18) and Carmarthen (SA31). We work across South Wales and the rest of the UK, so a site outside these postcodes is still covered.
